SULU SEA SOJOURN
The old badjao fisherman sat cross-legged at the bow of the outrigger boat. Bobbing in placid waters we spoke little. He scanned the surface for signs of life stirring from the deep as we drifted across the Sulu Sea. He gazed at the azure sky, and I photographed him gauging an uncertain future in the shifting clouds and current. Change is inevitable and photographers catch the passing of time. At the edge of the world, I let the rippling waters swirl through my fingers, feeling so good and bad at once - like a burst of split-second exposures, preserved or lost forever in time.
DAY 1: DUMAGUETE
We will meet you at the airport when you arrive in Dumaguete, which is an hour-long, 300-mile flight south of Manila to the island of Negros. You will be taken to Foundation University and participate in a brief group orientation before settling in.
We meet in the evening with a celebratory welcome dinner and introduce master photographer Mark Edward Harris, who will talk about working in Dumaguete. We encourage participants to stay after the presentation and get better acquainted with Mark Edward Harris and the South Pacific Photo Workshop staff.
DAY 2: BEGINNING
We begin with an instructional session with Mark Edward Harris, who will talk about vision and style, photographic thought processes and execution, and developing the skills and instincts that will dramatically improve your photography. The workshop then quickly shifts into high gear with a tight schedule of fieldwork that emphasizes maximum time on location making pictures.
Our first stop will be Rizal Boulevard, a seaside esplanade lined with historic, colonial-era homes alongside trappings of 21st century enterprise, including food stands and trinket vendors, the bustling port, hotels, restaurants and bars. The scene remains in constant and chaotic flux, with people passing and going - presenting in 360 degrees visuals unlike any other place.
DAY 3: MARKET & MOUNTAINS
We begin early with a visit to the Dumaguete Public Market, where you will encounter the unique sights, sounds, smells and vibe of a bustling market in the developing world. We will venture tight passages and walk amid vendor stalls of fresh meat, fish, poultry, produce, grain, flowers and sundries. Immerse yourself in the surroundings and get some great images.
In the afternoon we will take a bus into the nearby volcanic mountains that jut dramatically up from the coastal plain to Pulang Bato (Red Rock), a watershed of stunning beauty where a raging mountain stream pours out of a lava tube and forms a series of falls that push ribbons of whitewater through red and black rock. This location provides a glimpse of how nature sculpts the island environment.
In the evening, we will gather at the university to edit and discuss your work thus far.
DAY 4: SUNRISE & PEDICABS
At the crack of dawn we will catch the day’s beginning along the Dumaguete waterfront. The sun rises bright and hot, directly due east and straight up from the sea. More often than not, billowing clouds frame the scene, with fishermen casting nets at first light and beachcombers scavenging shallow, reflective tide pools.
Mark Edward will talk about light - how to see it, shape it and capture it - and you will use that knowledge immediately as you capture in pictures the start of a brand new day.
In the afternoon we set you up with your own pedicab, the ubiquitous vehicle that serves as local mass transport and basically consists of a covered sidecar welded onto the frame of a motorcycle. You are free to direct your driver around town to a variety of visual locations. We will pair you up with a personal fixer to help you navigate and translate the local dialect when necessary.
The day concludes with editing sessions and further discussion of your work.
DAY 5: TAMBOBO BAY
We leave campus early for an hour-long bus ride to Tambobo Bay, a picturesque seaside setting that features a small working port, replete with native fishing fleets, boat repair yards and yachts anchored in placid waters. The bay features a nature preserve and provides an ideal setting for photography.
We will spend the entire day at this location, and have ample time for workshop participants to delve into the local life and enterprise.
You will get some truly great images, and the idyllic setting lends itself to photo stories that include villagers at work along the shore and out at sea. We have made arrangements with local boatmen to use native outriggers that will transport you into the far reaches of the bay and nearby beaches, where even more stunning visuals await your discovery.
We return to the university in the evening to assist you with edits of the day’s work.
DAY 6: PORTRAITURE
We will venture to Foundation University’s experimental farms in the nearby towns of Tanjay and Amlan, where we will teach you how to light and shoot portraits.
Tanjay features a working rice farm, where we will photograph farm workers planting seedlings in sprawling paddies. The workers will also sit for environmental portraits, and Anacleto will teach you the basics of on-location lighting using off-cameras strobes and reflectors.
In the afternoon we will move to Amlan, where the university operates a coconut farm beside the sea. University students in native Filipino attire will join us for more on-location shooting. Anacleto will instruct you on how to set up and execute formal portraits, again using simple and effective lighting techniques.
The workshop concludes with dinner party and bonfire on the beach.
To get to Dumaguete, most travelers must pass through Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila.
→ Overseas flights arrive and depart at Terminals 1 and 2.
→ Domestic flights to and from the workshop in Dumaguete City depart and arrive at Terminal 3.
Upon arrival in Manila, you must make your way by taxicab to Terminal 3 for connecting flights to Dumaguete.
There are two early morning flights, and two afternoon flights:
→ Philippine Air Lines 7:35 a.m. and 2:40 p.m. to Dumaguete, and returning to Manila at 8:50 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
→ Cebu Pacific Airlines 8:25 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. to Dumaguete, and returning to Manila at 10:10 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Flights are scheduled every day.
